An exterior gathering area is added as an extension to the main unit. The design includes a mild outdoor landscaping and an accommodation unit. This juxtaposition of the two sides of Nafplio, the inner city and the sterile Akronafplia inspired us to occupy with this big linear pedestrian path that connects them.

We decided to focus on the activity of climbing that occurs on the impressive rocks on the side of the coastal road, an activity that is highly active in the area. Near the small beach of Neraki, we discovered that the double activity of swimming and climbing occurs in the same spot. In this node of functions, the proposal is placed.

The purpose was to express this introvert character of the town with the surrounding landscape, as a counterpoint with an extrovert relationship that a possible proposal would have with sea and nature, in order to redefine the “balance” in the area.

The vertical plane, is expressed as a vertical concrete wall, slightly tilted towards the rock. The space in between, is nesting the function of climbing, additionally to the exterior existing climbing track. The horizontal plane is expressed as a levitated concrete slab that penetrates the in-between space, a structured space of gathering. Free movement and wandering regardless of status at all levels was a key goal in the design to combine the special use of the intervention with its public character.

The intervention is a conversation between nature and artificial.
